Intercultural Competence for Global German Studies
Coleman, Nicole; Guntersdorfer, Ivett
Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, v52 n2 p138-145 Fall 2019
In this conversation, two U.S.-trained German language and culture educators discuss their approaches to intercultural communicative competence (ICC). Working in different educational settings -- in a German and Global Studies program at a public university in the U.S., and at the Institute for Intercultural Communication of a German university and a study abroad program -- the authors present definitions and key elements of ICC. They argue that ICC is usually not addressed in world language education. This conversation, therefore, focuses on strategies for the deliberate integration of ICC in undergraduate courses. The authors share how they incorporate ICC in language and content courses and provide concrete examples for exercises and assessment from their own teaching.
