Teaching about Political Boundaries Using WebGIS Tools and Data
Kerski, Joseph J.
Geography Teacher, v16 n4 p179-181 2019
Teaching and learning about political boundaries in an effective, engaging manner can be enriched through the use of webGIS mapping tools and spatial data. WebGIS enabled tools bring problem solving, critical thinking, and spatial analysis to education. Teaching with GIS is conducive to a multi-disciplinary, problem-solving learning environment using real data. Students need to examine the source, date, author, and other information on each map as they develop critical thinking skills (Kerski 2008). Using this lessons plan, students will become proficient in using geographic tools, but more importantly, they will learn about how maps work, how to communicate with maps, acquire media fluency, gain critical thinking skills, and learn why boundary issues are important.
