Let's Talk! Teaching Race in the Classroom
Flanagan, Candra; Hindley, Anna
Social Education, v81 n1 p62-66 Jan-Feb 2017
For educators, it is imperative to be aware of the effects of racism and to learn how to teach about them to students. The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture NMAAHC's signature workshop, "Let's Talk!", is designed to give educators tools--historical understanding, racial literacy, and pedagogical framing--that enable them to enter and be successful at having the challenging conversations needed with students and others within the educational environment. This article shares some of those tools and actionable steps that teachers can take in the classroom.
