Periodic Functions, Real Numbers and Least Common Multiples: Is the Sum of Two Periodic Functions Also Periodic?

In mathematics, there are countless connections between apparently unrelated topics. Students often find these relationships interesting, and they contribute to expanding their mathematical repertoires. This article describes one of these unusual connections, between the sum of periodic functions and the commensurable and incommensurable numbers. It begins with a motivating question that is investigated gradually, in stages, through three further questions. The proposed discussion describes possibilities for working with high-school students based on this unusual connection between the study of periodic functions and that of real numbers.
