Culture and Leadership: Personal and Alternating Values within Inconsistent Cultures
Dwairy, Marwan
International Journal of Leadership in Education, v22 n4 p510-518 2019
The vast majority of cross-cultural research has focused on a comparison between cultures across societies, ethnicities, nations and religions. These studies identified several dimensions and values that construct the human belief system and differentiate between cultures, with the individualism-collectivism dimension the most studied among them. This type of research disregards the diversity and individual differences within each culture, and undermines the internal dynamics that, together with external interactions with other cultures, promote change and development. For leadership that intends to promote change, utilising internal dynamics within culture is no less important than understanding the differences between cultures and the unique characteristics of the targeted culture. In this article, the author addresses two main aspects of culture that to date have attracted little attention in cultural research and literature and that are important for leadership to facilitate change: inconsistencies within each culture and personal culture.
