The Evolution of Alternative Dispute Resolution Practices by Residential Conduct Officers
Miele, Amy N.; Hamrick, Florence A.
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v45 n2 p14-29 2019
An early study of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in residence hall conduct settings was Pitts and Waryold's (1990) article "Conducting a Sanction Enhancement Group as an Alternative to Punishment in a University Residence Hall Discipline System" in "The Journal of College and University Student Housing" (see EJ1220508). Instead of assigning punitive sanctions for relatively minor community standards violations, the authors pilot-tested six weeks of structured group meetings with five residents--sessions that emphasized personal decision-making and positive engagement in the residential community. One semester later, these students had no additional disciplinary incident reports, and the pilot test was judged a success. In the almost 30 years since this article, residence life and student conduct professionals have developed or adapted a range of alternative dispute resolution models and practices (e.g., restorative justice) for use in their work. This historical trends manuscript traces the evolution, use, and efficacy of ADR models in residential student conduct settings. Targeted recommendations for professional practice and planning are offered.
