How Not to Be a Mountain Troll
Benson, Jeffrey
Educational Leadership, v73 n2 p42-45 Oct 2015
For many emotionally troubled students, adults in their lives have acted like the mountain trolls featured in the Harry Potter books: scary, unpredictable creatures who can't listen and who respond to conflicts with the club of punishment. Although emotionally fragile students often "act out" or withdraw in ways that create problems, and some people label these kids resistant or troublemakers, Benson notes that often these students just need to develop trust in a few predictable adults and they will turn around. Teachers have daily opportunities to engender that trust by acting predictable, reasonable, and willing to listen--the opposite of a mountain trolls. Benson describes four practices any teacher can take to build trust day by day: (1) recognize every student daily and notice and affirm students' moods; (2) provide think time so all students feel welcomed; (3) minimize absolute rules; and (4) avoid shaming students at all costs.
