Special Topic/ADHD: From Stereotype to Science
Brown, Thomas E.
Educational Leadership, v73 n2 p52-56 Oct 2015
The image of the student with ADHD as Dennis the Menace is an outdated stereotype. Some students with ADHD are restless and disruptive, notes the author, but many others who suffer from this disorder are quieter, more distracted and more passive, and not productive or consistent in their work. Thomas E. Brown, a well-known expert on ADHD, shares a wealth of recent research that shows the disorder for what it is--a complex syndrome with a wide range of characteristics. He debunks the notion that students with ADHD simply lack will power, and he signals some special difficulties that students may have with reading, memory, and writing.
