The Social Practice of Borderland Pedagogies
Leake, Maria de la Luz
Art Education, v72 n4 p50-58 2019
In 2018, a group of artists and educators known as Borderland Collective created an exhibition focusing on migration called One to Another. They incorporated various educational protocols, which they call "borderland pedagogies," to invite teens, teachers, and community members to better understand the complexities of migration through social interactions with others. Collectively, borderland pedagogies use social practice approaches to make learning visible. This instructional resource shares examples of borderland pedagogies and how they reflect the National Visual Arts Standards (National Coalition for Core Arts Standards, 2015). This instructional resource addresses the following learning objectives: (1) Explore borderland pedagogies through a social practice lens; (2) Consider how borderland pedagogies educationally reinforce the National Visual Arts Standards using examples; and (3) Reflect on how borderland pedagogies can make learning visible and promote civil discourse.
