An Examination of Factors That Contribute to the Development of Perspective Taking
Hemer, Kevin M.; Perez, Rosemary J.; Harris, Lincoln Wesley, Jr.
Journal of College and Character, v20 n2 p144-162 2019
This quantitative study explored how campus environments affected the development of students' capacities to take others' perspectives seriously. Data were collected from over 10,000 students at 15 institutions using the Personal and Social Responsibility Inventory (PSRI) to examine the relationships between individual and institutional factors and students' growth of perspective taking. We found that students' perceptions of the campus climates for perspective taking most strongly predicted the development of perspective taking. Students' openness to diversity and challenge and their participation in high impact practices (e.g., diversity courses, service-learning) were also positively related to the development of perspective taking.
