Social Media Use in Adolescents: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Roth, Rachel A.; Zielenski, Alicia A.; Daly, Bradford
Communique, v47 n7 p1, 30-31 May 2019
Adolescents' access to and use of social media is very staggering, with an estimated 95% of adolescents reportedly having access to a smartphone, which subsequently gives them nearly unlimited access to the online world; this is reflected in an estimated 45% of adolescents indicating that they are online almost constantly. The purpose of this article is to summarize the sparse extant literature regarding the benefits and negative outcomes of social media use for adolescents, including the connections between social media use and school-related outcomes. Additionally, this article includes implications for school psychologists in relation to social media usage in adolescents.
