For Ashley, Wayne, and Shayanna: Supporting Tribal College Students and Addressing Abuse

Tribal colleges are integral to the foundation of tribal sovereignty. They provide educational opportunities and professional development that give students the tools they need to become future leaders. They can no longer continue do that while tribal colleges continue to lose students to violence. The burdens and challenges that Native students face are well-documented statistically, but sometimes it takes the very real human stories of tribal college students to move us to action. This article shares the author's reflections of three of the author's students at Blackfeet Community College. In the reflections shared, the author hopes to give a small sense of why Ashley's disappearance, Wayne's death, and Shayanna's case have had such a profound effect on her. This article calls for tribal colleges to make a shift in institutional culture that requires faculty and staff who are trained to provide trauma-informed services, mentorship, and teaching, as well as an environment that supports students and cares for them. Tribal colleges must take on the leadership needed to be the lifesaving, transformational educational institutions their students need.
