Motivations for Entering Teaching and Some Implications for the Selection of Potentially Effective Teachers

To explore the motives for students selecting teaching as a career during the current period of job scarcity and teacher oversupply, responses were solicited from 275 currently enrolled undergraduate education majors. Revealed two trends: a) an increase in idealistic and materialistic motives, b) a striking decrease in those of an intellectual nature. (Author)
