Quilting Our County: Fusing Research and Artmaking in the Classroom
Nieberding, William
Art Education, v70 n6 p7-13 2017
This article explores the arts-integrated approach to teaching and learning by combining the art of quilt making, technology, and research. The author challenged his students to use technology and the knowledge of their surrounding county to create a quilt that reflects a sense of community and engagement. The goal was to encourage a more engaged exploration of arts integration by having students conduct research in a non-art content area while learning about and producing an art product. Students developed research skills while also learning to create collaboratively. Research and artmaking blended in an iterative, improvisational way, and an openness to serendipity acted as an active component of learning and expressing knowledge.
