Nutritional Recovery Considerations for Intermittent Exercise and Sport
Kessinger, Theodore K.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v31 n6 p26-33 2018
The nutritional considerations that aid in the recovery of an athlete after intermittent exercise and the timing of nutrients are vital to the athlete's performance in their sport. This article will focus on carbohydrate, protein, fluids, and timing of recovery nutrition. The intake of carbohydrates for both endurance and resistance exercise has proven to benefit training and subsequently should also apply to intermittent sports. Protein intake and the repair and development of muscle are imperative for continued performance in sport. Post-exercise recovery nutrition combined with carbohydrate and protein fluid mixtures also appears to enhance muscle recovery. Central to the discussion of nutrients with respect to recovery nutrition is also the timing of ingestion of these nutrients. Intermittent sports athletes can utilize recovery nutrition strategies to enhance their training level and subsequently their performance in sport.
