Seeing Me in You: Teaching Empathy and Learning Courage through Picture Books
Katch, Jane
Schools: Studies in Education, v15 n2 p216-227 Fall 2018
How can educators help privileged children develop understanding of and compassion for immigrants in schools where there is very little diversity in their classrooms? The author used picture books to help children feel closer to those who came from challenging environments to find a better life in the United States. She discovered that asking children to imagine being in the place of the characters in the books elicited honest and thoughtful discussions that allowed them to feel empathy for immigrant families. While exploring these questions, the author came to understand that her own family's experiences with immigration and her own life of privilege were inextricably intertwined with her work with this curriculum and that both her own life and her teaching were enriched by looking at those connections.
