The art community tends to uphold the "norms of the able bodied majority" (Penketh, 2016). For this reason, museum patrons are discouraged from handling the art. While the intent is to preserve the quality of the art is understandable, for visually impaired individuals, this is a problem. In instances when efforts have been made to increase accessibility of art exhibitions, there are still often concerns with aesthetics, sociability, and comfort for the non-disabled (Barnes & Mercer, 2003). This article describes the motivation and creation of "Sensory: Please Touch the Art," a community-based art experience designed to empower individuals with visual impairments to create and exhibit their art in Omaha, Nebraska.
