Currently, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, math, and art) education is on the rise. Asmore schools are adopting a STEAM model, professional development is needed. Non-arts teachers need to learn how to infuse the arts into STEM subjects and vice versa. Teachers need to understand that STEAM education must use culturally relevant teaching (CRT) in order to help close the achievement gap for underrepresented students. In 2016, a team of college faculty members collaborated to create an innovative multimodal approach to teaching STEAM as a professional development that would be offered at a conference targeting educators from across the country. The professional development approach had five segments: (1) storytelling examples, (2) infusion of the arts into STEM, (3) technology, (4) CRT and storytelling, and (5) participant worktime and showcase. It was designed in a way that unpacked the process by introducing techniques, procedures, methods, and pedagogies using the arts; exploring STEM subjects in a creative way; and considering how CRT practices could be applied. The workshop: (1) Provided educators several models to help students construct academic knowledge through artmaking and storytelling; (2) Gave students the voice or the cultural competence to approach standards in ways that make the information relevant; and (3) Used artmaking as a means for students to develop a sociopolitical consciousness and evoke change.
