"Invincible Black Women": Group Therapy for Black College Women
Jones, Martinque K.; Pritchett-Johnson, Brandi
Journal for Specialists in Group Work, v43 n4 p349-375 2018
Black college women present to counseling with an array of culturally distinct mental health concerns. There is also a subpopulation of women who may be hesitant to seek services, despite their need. These facts substantiate the necessity for culturally responsive outreach and intervention targeted at this demographic. The authors present the outreach and intervention techniques associated with "Invincible Black Women," a culturally relevant interpersonal process group implemented with Black women attending a predominately White institution. Based on counselor experience and group member feedback, the authors offer suggestions regarding the format, topics, and facilitation style useful in promoting Black college women's mental wellness.
