(Mis)Recognition: Language and the Struggle for Identity
Abshir, Fatima
Changing English: Studies in Culture and Education, v25 n4 p327-330 2018
As humans, we all experience the fundamental need to belong. Often, this sense of belonging is inherited and nurtured by our families and their histories, the languages we speak and the cultures we adhere to; and it is in our experiences and engagement with these aspects of ourselves that our identities are formed, contested, negotiated and subsequently reformed. What follows is a brief autobiographical account that explores my relationship with learning and unlearning languages at different points in my life and how these processes shaped an intrinsic understanding of myself and the world.
