Beyond Perceptions: A School-Community Partnership Focusing on Homelessness
Helmick, Linda
Art Education, v71 n4 p14-20 2018
The "Beyond Perceptions" collaborative visual art project, an ongoing initiative by the Indianapolis Art Center, provided opportunities for high school students to engage with homeless individuals through partnerships with people and organizations in the community who serve this marginalized group. These experiences challenged preconceptions about homelessness. Students became aware of the transformation of their own attitudes by reflecting on a series of themed art projects made before and after meeting, listening to, and visually responding to firsthand stories of homeless experiences. The "Beyond Perceptions" program combined formal school artmaking with informal community-based art education (CBAE). The program brought homelessness from the edges of the community to the center for these high school students. The partnership opened space for students and community members to grapple with fundamental questions of identity, justice, freedom, and equality. The project is presented in this article.
