Mindset for Math: Coaching Cycle Empowers Students and Teachers
Chapman, Sue; Mitchell, Mary
Learning Professional, v39 n5 p60-64 Oct 2018
It is important for mathematics teachers to see themselves as mathematics learners and to see mathematics as comprehensible, purposeful, and fun. A teacher's mindset influences many aspects of teaching and learning, including the learning tasks they offer, the ways in which they orchestrate classroom discourse, their response to mistakes, and their assessment practices. Coaching works well to support teachers as they learn to recognize and navigate their internal mindsets, because mindset awareness and choice are metacognitive processes that can be learned and strengthened through practice. Four steps to help coaches and school leaders facilitate a cycle of inquiry to transform teachers' mindsets and students' learning include: (1) Invite teachers to think about mathematical mindset (via discussion, workshops and other faculty development); (2) Plan the learning partnership; (3) Have teachers gather data and take on the roles of experimenters and researchers; and (4) Encourage teachers to reflect on the experience and causal relationships that may be suggested by the data.
