School and Religion in Kazakhstan: No Choice for Believers
Podoprigora, Roman
Journal of School Choice, v12 n4 p588-604 2018
Despite more than 25 years of existence of Kazakhstan in a new political reality after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the government and society are still afraid of religious institutions and alternatives in many areas of social life, including education. This article reviews the reasons for such an attitude and the issues that arise with respect to teaching about religion in schools. The author concludes that even in such an unfriendly environment for religious education, there is a possibility to make decisions that would assist believers to receive education for their children corresponding to their religious beliefs.
