Assessing the Virtual Collaborative Needs of Capstone Project Teams
Lesko, Charles
International Journal on E-Learning, v17 n4 p479-502 Oct 2018
Virtual collaboration has become an increasingly critical aspect within today's classrooms and modern workplaces. Specifically, virtual collaboration involves groups of people working together who typically are: geographically dispersed; interdependent in their tasks while sharing a common responsibility for task outcomes; and rely on mediated communication to either supplement or supplant face-to-face interaction. This effort encompasses a review of various virtual collaborative aspects of (76) capstone projects, involving over (320) students that were completed over an eight-year period with the intent identify and present many of the practical challenges associated with virtual collaborations within capstone projects. The preferred methods, practices and regularity of virtual collaborations as well as the characteristics of several types of projects and their collaborative efforts are considered. The types of projects include those projects supporting public/non-profit organizations; projects supporting private industry; and projects supporting various applications on campus. Preliminary analysis of relevant capstone student and client survey data as well as analysis of both formal and informal project communications planning efforts indicates a clear need for this level of collaborative preparation even with small project teams of (3-5) members. Key takeaways and implications for capstone facilitators and practitioners are also addressed.
