The Leadership Challenge
Skalski, Anastasia Kalamaros
Communique, v4 n4 p1, 22-23 Dec 2013
"The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been." This quote by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger can be framed for school psychologists in this way: "The task of National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) is to get school psychologists from where they are today to where they have not yet been, but need to be." The author asks and answers the following questions: (1) Where is school psychology today; (2) Where does school psychology need to go; and (3) Who are the leaders that need to take NASP on this journey? These are just a few of the types of questions that NASP leaders have tackled over the last couple years as part of the strategic planning process. One of the things that has emerged from this process is a new emphasis on visionary leadership and the importance of building and maintaining effective leaders. One of the things that NASP's strategic planning process gave birth to was a new set of core values to ground the association. The author maintains that as NASP moves into the future, it is time that every school psychologist embraces his or her leader within. Each member has the capacity to lead within the school psychologist's sphere of influence. To be successful, NASP members need to understand clearly what the message is, why it is important, and how to express it. Basic steps are outlined that can help any school psychologist lead intentionally from the middle.
