After a Suicide: Answering Parents' Difficult Questions
Lieberman, Richard; Poland, Scott
Communique, v45 n7 p8, 10, 12 May 2017
The suicide of a young person not only creates crisis response challenges for school personnel but also sparks a multitude of reactions and questions from parents who may be anxious about contagion and the increased risk of another suicide occurring. Providing leadership in the aftermath of a student death by suicide is an essential role of the school psychologist and requires knowledge, preparedness, and possession of best practice resources for administrators, staff, and above all, parents. The authors have provided consultation to numerous school districts in the aftermath of student suicides and have led many community forums with the goals of empowering and informing parents of their critical role in suicide prevention. They have learned the importance of having a broad-based topic for the percent presentation, such as "Safeguarding Children in a Challenging World" or "Building Resiliency and Helping Children After Traumatic Events." In this article, the authors share a few of the difficult questions that were posed by concerned parents after a cluster of student suicides shocked and overwhelmed their community.
