2018 Senior Researcher Award Acceptance Address: Open-Mindedness for ALL Available Research Data
Price, Harry E.
Journal of Research in Music Education, v66 n3 p253-260 Oct 2018
Harry E. Price, recipient of the 2018 Senior Researcher Award, begins by sharing some data that come from an examination of all the citations in the "Journal of Research in Music Education", from its beginning to 2015. The article also describes the 1,000 year old approach to the basic concept of questioning ideas. Price reminds the audience that the first step in exploring ideas is to consider conceptions that are believed to be real. Then, there is a need to examine those ideas with experiments and observations. Based on the results, ideas are further built that are supported by research and those that fail, are rejected. Researchers then develop concepts, create assessments to view whether the ideas work or not, and then build on this information toward the attainment of knowledge-based results. The goal is to follow the evidence, not to build on what we believe. In the end, the key is to "question everything," even if the idea makes complete sense but has no data available to support it. Five steps to an inquiry approach are presented: (1) Test the idea; (2) Build on the concepts that are supported; (3) Reject the ones that fail; (4) Follow the evidence wherever it leads; and (5) This will lead to a clarified idea and the next research project.
