"unConference": Convening Women on Campus in the Age of #MeToo
Bentin, Moana; McGonegal, Joe
New England Journal of Higher Education, Aug 2018
Eventbrite listed about 400 "women's conferences" in 2017, many inspired when the term #MeToo took off. In Fall 2017, MIT developed the "MIT Women's 'unConference'" based on the idea of just inviting a crowdsourced agenda, saying yes to the alumnae community's ideas, aligning with other women's entities and events, and inviting all women to participate, including non-MIT women. The unconference was held March 9-10, 2018. Planners invited women to submit panel proposals, nominate lightning speakers, choose startup and research competition winners, crowdsource mentors, explore new jobs at a career fair, and volunteer for nonprofits showcasing their missions. They invited 25,000 alumnae to help choose which panels to present and another 25,000 women who held MITx certificates to participate in an entrepreneur-in-residence meetup and a startup expo. Over 350 women attended, and 600 participated online. Thirty startups founded by MIT women pitched business plans, a dozen researchers submitted elevator pitches, and over 100 women shared their work on stage. Campus-wide collaborators sourced content and volunteers and helped in marketing. An after-hours meetup was hosted on the conference's opening night. Results from the conference survey showed that attendees wanted more options, events, speakers, time, workshops, exhibitors, and networking.
