Grounded in Their Work: Interpreting Perceptions of Professional Values by Participants in Student Affairs Preparation Programs
Bureau, Daniel A.
Journal of College and Character, v19 n3 p215-228 2018
Socialization to a profession includes the development of the field's values. Socialization into student affairs often takes place through participation in a master's preparation program. This study addressed socialization to student affairs' values, in particular graduate students' perceptions of essential student affairs values. Through a qualitative study, impressions about student affairs values development were collected from 17 master's students during the second-semester in the second-year of their graduate program. Through analysis, 13 shared values of student affairs were identified: diversity and inclusion, collaboration, learning, student-centeredness, change and responsiveness, ethics, holistic student development, intentionality, community, service, professional development, caring, and responsibility.
