Supervision: Feedback and Evaluation
Cruise, Tracy K.
Communique, v47 n1 p4, 6 Sep 2018
Feedback and evaluation are key components of the developmental process of supervision through which professional growth and competencies are shaped. Evaluation and feedback occur continuously throughout training and include formative and summative feedback. Supervisors and supervisees need to consider the processes and procedures through which feedback will be delivered and communicate these through the supervision contract. Ongoing feedback helps address any areas of concern and allows for correction so that supervisees meet developmental expectations and are unsurprised by summative evaluations at the conclusion of training. Involvement of supervisees in self-assessment will help create a long-term self-reflective practice approach. Although this article covers some of the universal fundamentals of feedback and evaluation, these functions take on additional importance when a supervisee demonstrates problems of professional competence.
