Young Children with Same-Sex Parents: Supporting Families and Children in Early Childhood Programs
Davis, Jackie M.; Hanline, Mary Frances
Young Exceptional Children, v21 n3 p127-141 Sep 2018
This article provides suggestions for how early childhood (EC) special educators can create environments free of harassment and discrimination that are welcoming to all children and families with a focus on families of same-sex parents. Table 2 provides a list and description of resources that will help teachers develop EC settings that welcome children and parents from same-sex parented families. As more children of families with same-sex parents enter EC programs, to be consistent with the mandates of professional ethics, schools and teachers must find ways to build trusting and respectful relationships with both the children and same-sex parents to create a positive classroom atmosphere where children can develop and thrive and parents can feel comfortable participating in their child's education.
