A Self-Determination Intervention for Youth Placed in a Short-Term Juvenile Detention Facility

Detained youth require positive, effective, and efficient interventions to reduce recidivism and negative youth outcomes. Juvenile justice research has focused primarily on strategies and interventions for youth in long-term detention centers, while short-term facilities have been generally overlooked. Youth detained in short-term facilities, particularly those with disabilities, are entitled to transition (aftercare) services as they move out of the facility back to their home school or into the community. In this small, pilot study, a self-determination intervention, Possible Selves, was modified for delivery in a short-term detention facility with 17 youth over six months. The research design was (a) a pre/post analysis of self-reported motivation scores and (b) comparison of participant recidivism results to the facility average. Results based on the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory suggest that participants increased their overall motivation and interest in goal planning. Additionally, their rate of recidivism decreased compared to the average rate of youth detained in the short-term facility. Participants rated the intervention as socially valid. Limitations, future directions, and implications for research and practice are discussed.
