Juvenile Correctional Professional Development: From Conceptualization to Evaluation
Shippen, Margaret E.; Houchins, David E.; Lockwood, Susan
Journal of Correctional Education, v65 n1 p68-87 Jan 2014
The primary purpose of this article is to provide juvenile corrections (JC) education leaders with considerations related to arranging for and implementing professional development (PD) opportunities for JC teachers. Additionally, this information can be used by JC teachers who want to be better informed about PD expectations and requirements. The information is presented in three parts. Part 1 of this article involves conceptualizing PD activities. This section describes how to select PD activities. Part 2 provides suggestions on implementing PD activities. The suggestions are based on what is known about putting into practice JC PD procedures. Part 3 involves connecting PD to changes in teacher and student behaviors in the school. Processes related to using implementation fidelity procedures and making data-based decisions within a continuous improvement model are highlighted. [This article is part of a series of practice guides developed by practitioners and academic researchers as part of a larger study being conducted by the RAND Corporation on the effectiveness of correctional education.]
