Educating Alienated Inner-City Youth: Lessons from the Street Academies
Levine, Daniel U.
Journal of Negro Education, 44, 2, 139-148, Spr 75
In order to try to explain the success of street academies, descriptions of such schools from both the popular and professional literature are used to develop an analysis of typical program characteristics; suggest less obvious possible reasons for success which are usually not cited and speculate on one global program characteristic that may be critical for effectiveness: a commitment to a humanistic concern for the individual as a unique person.
