Rule - Governed Behavior as a Psychological Process
Segal, Erwin M.; Stacy, E. Webb, Jr.
American Psychologist, 30, 5, 541-552, May 75
Some descriptive criteria for identifying rule-governed behavior are identified from the perspective of cognitive psychology. It is suggested that the concept of explanation in psychology be modified from a specification in terms of physical properties of the antecedent events in a causal sequence to a mapping of rules onto behavior or behavior patterns. An outline of such a model for rules in formal grammar is advanced and the role of rules as explanatory devices in current research is reviewed. (EH)
