A Cost-Benefit Analysis of Subjective Factors Affecting Assimilation: Puerto Ricans
Rodriquez, Clara
Ethnicity, 2, 1, 66-80, Mar 75
The issue of Puerto Rican assimilation is addressed within a cost-benefit analysis framework. The desire of Puerto Ricans to assimilate is discussed in terms of (1) what they expect to gain; (2) what they perceive their chances are of "making it"; (3) the perceived social costs of assimilation; and (4) what other alternatives to assimilation are seen as possible. The small sample of Puerto Ricans interviewed seem to indicate that biculturation is the present strategy for survival with little desire for outright assimilation. (EH)
