Reimagining Library-School Partnerships to Promote Family Engagement
Caspe, Margaret; Lopez, M. Elena
Childhood Education, v94 n4 p30-38 2018
Innovation often means finding new ways to make better use of resources that already exist in our communities. A new initiative to connect schools and libraries was just the right catalyst to enhance family engagement. The New York Public Library (NYPL), which has 88 neighborhood branches across The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, was one partner. This article describes how the NYPL developed a project-based learning approach to connect teachers, librarians, and children and their families. The approach was a new way to demonstrate family engagement as a shared home, school, and community responsibility for children's learning.
