Why Ask Why? Questions to Elicit Reasoned Intuitive Responses in an Elementary Music Program
Downton, Michael P.
Contributions to Music Education, v43 p175-195 2018
Intuitions are incomplete knowledge structures that help us make sense of the world around us. Additionally, when learners are given opportunities to talk about their intuitive understanding, it helps construct their knowledge in a domain (music). The issue with intuitions and intuitive responses is not whether they are correct or incorrect, but do they help us make sense of the world? To help understand how intuitions can be helpful, I identify two types of intuitive responses that emerge when students are engaged in making an artifact (piece of music). The first is the "General Intuitive Response" (GIR), which is a response that focuses on a surface level description of a phenomenon. The second is the "Reasoned Intuitive Response" (RIR), which further provides reasoning, justification, or speculation as to how the phenomenon works. The purpose of this research is to investigate the types of questions asked that elicit the different types of intuitive responses. Students in two fourth grade classrooms (N = 36) engaged in a variety of computer music making activities using the software Impromptu. Findings suggest that the role of the practitioner is crucial in eliciting quality intuitive responses from students, and that asking "why?" is most appropriate in prompting RIR. Implications for practice, policy, and research are discussed.
