Graduate Research Forum Review 2018--My Life, Your Life, Our Life: Glimpses into Past, Present, and Future in Feminist Music Education Research
Coen-Mishlan, Kristin
Contributions to Music Education, v43 p197-200 2018
Each year at the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference, a respected scholar is invited to talk on relevant issues in music education inquiry and practice. This year, Dr. Roberta Lamb presented in Columbus on the topic of past, present, and future feminist research in music education and beyond. She shared her experiences of more than 30-years as a self-proclaimed radical lesbian feminist, navigating historical and cultural attitudes toward women, within the realm of music teaching and learning. With a focus on equity and social justice, Dr. Lamb has worked most of her career towards moving the field forward in speaking about and advocating for marginalized, yet important voices. Areas addressed included her personal stories, segments on past-present-future, and guiding difficult conversations, along with highlighting feminist and social justice literature from the past several decades. This presentation provided a critical perspective for how the profession can better represent and respect all those involved in musical learning.
