Odyssey: New Directions in Deaf Education, v19 p64-68 2018
While expanding the curriculum of every medical school would be ideal, evidence has shown that even a one-day training on deaf awareness and communication can have a positive impact on how doctors support their deaf and hard of hearing patients (Humphries et al., 2014). This article describes the training that Gallaudet University developed with Howard University, which can serve as a model for other educational programs throughout the country that are interested in reaching out and partnering with medical schools and doctors. Initiation of such a program has the potential to improve medical service provision to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. The article provides a model of 5 points deaf educators can convey to students for use in reaching out to the medical community to improve the level of care for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
