Journal of College and Character, v19 n2 p167-174 2018
The low enrollment, retention, and graduation rate among men of color in higher education is a national crisis. The John Jay SEEK Department has created a committee focused exclusively to address this crisis. The committee's work includes focus and weekly support groups. The groups entitled P.O.W.E.R. (Pushing Our Will to Experience Resilience) are designed to enhance the college experience for our male students of color. Factors that negatively impact academic success for men of color at John Jay and across the country are highlighted. Concrete solutions that can be implemented at various programs in higher education settings are provided.
