Caregivers' Experience of Separation from Children in Daycare
Court, Deborah; Shohet, Cilly; Hantz, Michal
Educational Practice and Theory, v33 n2 p63-82 2011
While children's and parents' experience of separation has been the subject of many studies and considerable theoretical work, child caregivers' experience of separation has yet to be researched. The current study aimed, through in-depth interviews with ten Israeli day care workers, to contribute toward understanding of the experience of day care workers regarding separation from young children in their charge. Content analysis of the qualitative data revealed that separation is often painful and difficult, although the women understand that it is part of life in the daycare. Their feelings, beliefs and coping strategies are presented, and implications for quality of care are discussed.
