Social Capital and School Development: Perspectives from Southwest China

This paper discusses, from the perspective of social capital, the development of two schools and its teachers in a school district in Chongqing, a major city in Southwest China. This study focuses on the understanding of school members of "social capital" and "bridging" activities that facilitate the development of learning communities within and across schools and enhance teaching and learning innovations. Furthermore, "Linking" activities between schools and other agencies, communication between schools and parents, and the role of the school district in these linkages and bridges are examined. The implications for future school development in China are discussed.
