Using Boundary Spanners to Turn a Student-Managed Café into a College-Wide Business Learning Laboratory

This paper describes an experiential capstone strategy course and an interesting innovation by a team of students that helps spread experiential learning to many business courses. Students operate a retail café as a captive client for strategic consulting. Students sweep floors, serve espresso drinks, and set strategy. The café is a learning laboratory for student experiments, much as a chemistry lab helps students experiment with chemicals. Faculty and students found doing projects with the café difficult due to poor communication and coordination. The café team added a dedicated boundary spanning team to assist users with experiments and observations. These students span boundaries between the café and outside courses, ensuring that the projects are designed for implementation while minimizing disruption of the café's retail business. These projects often improve the café's retail capability and make it an effective learning laboratory for the whole college.
