This article discusses various approaches to linguistics, the basic distinction being that between the scientific descriptive and the introspective speculative approach. The latter is excluded as not part of true fundamental linguistics. A discussion follows on the concept of linguistic theory and description as pertaining to the functionalist approach. (AM)
