Women's Perceived and Desired Support for Weight Loss
Connor, Alicia; George, Gretchen
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v110 n1 p38-44 Win 2018
This study investigated definitions of support, the types of support perceived as helpful, and types of support desired by adult women maintaining recent weight loss. Qualitative data were collected from 15 women across four focus groups. Thematic analysis indicated that "community" and "self-efficacy," both forms of functional support were perceived as most influential in weight management. Interestingly, the support most desired, but not received, was from health professionals. Family and consumer sciences health professionals and Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, in roles supporting basic human needs, can use this information to facilitate support and education during women's weight loss and continued wellness.
