An Introduction to Heredity: Part 2
Powell, Britnie; Drits-Esser, Dina; Malone, Molly; Stark, Louisa A.
Science and Children, v55 n6 p42-48 Feb 2018
While elementary teachers do not typically cover the structure and function of DNA, their students can easily understand that organisms have observable traits, that each individual has a unique combination of traits, and that the "recipe" for traits is passed from parent to offspring. The Genetic Science Learning Center has developed and tested a collection of classroom activities and homework or extension activities, collectively called "Introduction to Heredity," that help students explore concepts in heredity. In this article, the authors provide descriptions of two of these activities that focus on inheritance, "Generations of Traits" and "A Recipe for Traits," and examples of Ms. Anderson using them in her classroom. Each activity in the collection can be used alone or combined as part of a unit on heredity. The teacher guides and copy masters for the activities are available to download for free (see Internet Resources) and are available in English and Spanish versions. A short video of students carrying out the activities and a brief interview with their teacher can also be accessed from this site. All of the activities use inexpensive and mostly reusable materials. Further, these activities can easily be adapted for community events such as science fairs or back-to-school night.
