Talking with Our Hands
Thomas, Jonathan N.
Teaching Children Mathematics, v24 n5 p308-314 Mar 2018
Gesture is a powerful and frequent means of mathematical communication. It is a rich modality through which we may reach out to students and they may reach out to teachers, and this is particularly true for instances in which spoken language is not necessarily a commonality among classroom participants. Indeed, our movements help us share more deeply in the mathematics of the moment as we talk with one another, not only with our voices, but also with our hands.
