How Do Adults Learn to Read? A Communities of Practice Approach
Negassa, Tolera; Rogers, Alan; Warkineh, Turuwark Zalalam
Prospects: Quarterly Review of Comparative Education, v46 n3-4 p345-355 Dec 2016
This article explores whether looking at adult literacy teaching through the lens of Lave and Wenger's "community of practice" approach to learning provides useful additional insights into adults learning to read, especially the role of the adult literacy facilitator. Using some case studies of facilitators from the Ethiopian Integrated Functional Adult Literacy Programme, it discusses their literacy practices and how far these match the aspirations of their adult learners, especially in relation to digital literacy practices.
