One Question: Can You Attend Full-Time, One Time?
Waiwaiole, Evelyn; Elston, Dhanfu
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v49 n6 p23-31 2017
Originally, the mission of the community college was one of access--to provide an opportunity for students to attend postsecondary education without leaving their communities. Over time, though, as more students enrolled in these institutions, many never left with an associate's degree, credential, or transfer to a four-year college or university. Because of this, a national call to action to increase completion rates was announced in April 2010. Researchers have studied enrollment patterns in community colleges and examined the impact on persistence, retention, and completion. Community colleges are putting into place practices that facilitate and incentivize full-time enrollment, and the data are showing gains on graduation rates. This article presents findings from Complete College America (CCA) and the Center for Community College Student Engagement (the Center) that highlight the importance of full-time enrollment--with the Center's research focusing on the difference even one term of full-time enrollment can make--and CCA's conclusions highlighting what matters for on-time completion. The authors provide a closer look at what the field is learning and actions that are being taken by statewide systems and institutions to reform the student experience by building initiatives and programs focused on more full-time attendance.
